Chinese Golfers Lead the Way at Tomson Golf Club
The World Final of the Volvo World Golf Challenge began in earnest today for the 71 national qualifiers over the championship course at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club. Just two days ago, this was the venue for Wu Ashun’s historic victory in the 21st Volvo China Open.
Inspired by the professionals, the competitors posted some fine scores, and at the end of the day it was Zheng Tong from China who was clear at the top of the leaderboard at 3-under par. At the press conference following his round, he said, “The weather conditions really helped my game, and the caddies gave us valuable help and support on this challenging course.”
Tied in second place are Osamu Ishida from Japan and Zheng’s fellow countryman Zhong Pengchi, both at 2-under. Lena Apelgren from Sweden is currently the best-placed lady in the field, tied for 7th place.
The reaction from all the World Finalists has been very positive, both with regard to Shanghai as a destination, and about the exciting programme of events for the World Final. Everyone agrees that it is the perfect way for Volvo and their customers to interact with the added bonus of spending time with and getting to know the finalists and hosts from many other countries.
Raymond Hassarati from Sydney has been a Volvo Trucks and Construction Equipment customer for many years, and he feels that, “Our Volvo contacts have always treated us like family and that is even more the case here at the World Final. That relationship really is fantastic. Just to be here playing in this amazing event makes me feel very special – just like a proper sportsman! All in all, it is just the greatest experience.”
Tomorrow sees the second round take place, the grand finale with a host of players in contention when anything can happen. With one Chinese winner here already this week, will it be a second triumph for the host nation or will someone else climb the leaderboard to become the new champion?!
