Wedge pitches in for World Final
The inaugural Volvo Masters Amateur event (from now on Volvo World Golf Challenge) in Qatar delivered an appropriately named champion in the form of Wedge Louison, who makes the short hop to Bahrain for the world final and the chance to ‘Play with the Pros.’
The 14-handicapper, who is a drilling superintendent with Qatar Petroleum Offshore is a, “Self confessed golf addict,” he and his wife Diane being founder members of the Doha Golf Club since 1996.
“The qualifier was one round and I played with a really good player, Scott Hussey, and he inspired me with his really good round,” explained Wedge, adding, “I knew I was playing well, but I didn’t know the number of points I was accumulating, as if I did I would have fallen apart, as usual when I think about my score.”
He qualified with 41 Stableford points out of almost 200 players who entered the first-ever Volvo Masters Amateur event in the Middle East, which took place over the 7,374-yard, Par-72 course that has hosted the Qatar Masters since its inception in 1988, following in the footsteps of global golfing champions such as Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Retief Goosen, Henrik Stenson and this year’s champion Robert Karlsson.
The right-hander, who has been playing golf since 1972 was also the Chief Marshall at the inaugural Doha Masters on the European Tour in 1998 and is excited by the prospect of making the short journey to Bahrain for his own world championship of golf.
“I am extremely happy with my victory, as I’d love to represent Qatar in the Volvo Masters Amateur World Final in Bahrain,” he says, adding, “I hope I can be one of the lucky players to play with the professionals in the European Tour tournament.”
Commenting on the groundbreaking event in Doha, David Forster, Brand Manager – Volvo, who had been involved in the Volvo Masters Amateur in the UK for 25 years said, “Overall, it was a fantastic event, really successful,” adding, “We all wish our champion Wedge Louison every success at the world final in Bahrain, whilst, for the rest of the players, they have great memories, fantastic photographs and a special certificate of the occasion.”
Fast Fact: The reigning champion at the Qatar Masters is Swede Robert Karlsson, who also won the Dubai World Championship and is signed-up to play the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions in Bahrain from 27th – 30th January 2011.
